If you or a loved one are planning to move to the U.S., or if you have already lived in the U.S. for several years, you could be wondering what healthcare options are available to you once you turn 65. There is even Medicare for immigrants.
Health insurance can save you a lot of money when it comes to your medical costs, but without an insurance plan, you could be looking at expensive payments. It’s always best to save money in case of possible emergencies, but that might not be enough to give you the coverage you need.
The good news is that Medicare is available to anyone who qualifies and meets the specific requirements.
I just moved to the U.S. Am I eligible for Medicare?
Unfortunately, if you have recently moved to the U.S. or are planning to, you will not be eligible for Medicare. However, there is another option you can choose. Any senior who is not enrolled in Medicare can receive guaranteed-issue private health insurance through the private exchanges.
If you move to the U.S. and remain undocumented, you will not be eligible for Medicare, Medicaid, or any healthcare offered through the private exchanges.
How can I become eligible for Medicare?
If you have lived in the U.S. for five years or more, you will obtain the status as a permanent legal resident and could be eligible for Medicare benefits when you turn 65. You can also receive premium-free Medicare Part A if you have paid Medicare payroll taxes or have a qualifying work history in the U.S.
It’s also important to note that Medicare may cost more for immigrants compared to what it may cost for U.S. citizens.
If you haven’t paid Medicare payroll taxes but are a permanent resident, you are still eligible for Medicare but will be expected to pay the monthly premiums. You may also be eligible for Medicaid if you need more assistance, but make sure to check with your state’s Medicaid program to determine your eligibility. Keep in mind that each state’s requirements can vary.
