While both the High-Deductible plans offer lower premiums for higher deductibles, each plan comes with different benefits. One of the main differences between the two is that High-Deductible Plan F offers coverage for the Medicare Part B deductible, on top of its other benefits. However, it’s important to know that Medicare Supplement Plan F and High-Deductible Plan F will no longer be made accessible to those who became eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020. If you were eligible before this date, you still have the opportunity to enroll.
What’s the difference between regular Medicare Supplement plans and High-Deductible plans?
While the high-deductible plans exist, so do their regular supplement plan counterparts: Medicare Supplement Plan F and Medicare Supplement Plan G. Medicare Supplement plans are used to help cover medical costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like deductibles and coinsurance. When using a plan with a high deductible, you’ll usually pay a lower premium compared to that of a supplement plan. However, in return, you’ll have a higher deductible of $2,340 for 2020.
High-Deductible Plan F
The same benefits and coverage are offered for both Medicare Supplement Plan F and High-Deductible Plan F. The benefits include:
- Deductible for Original Medicare Part A
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare’s benefits are used up
- Deductible, excess charges, and coinsurance/copayments for Part B
- First three pints of blood used in a medical procedure that’s approved by Medicare
- Coinsurance for a skilled nursing facility
- 80% of a foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits)
With Medicare Supplement Plan F, you’ll only be paying for your monthly premium with no other out-of-pocket costs and you’ll immediately have coverage. However, with the High-Deductible Plan F, you won’t receive coverage until the $2,340 high-deductible is paid. Once the deductible is met, then you’ll receive the same benefits and coverage offered from the supplement plan.
High-Deductible Plan G
The same benefits and coverage are offered for both Medicare Supplement Plan G and High-Deductible Plan G. The benefits include:
- Deductible for Original Medicare Part A
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
- Excess charges and coinsurance/copayments for Part B
- First three pints of blood used in a medical procedure that’s approved by Medicare
- Coinsurance for a skilled nursing facility
- Foreign travel emergency
Just like High-Deductible Plan F, High-Deductible Plan G will not offer you coverage until you have paid the deductible ($2,340). Once the deductible is met, then you will receive the same benefits offered by Medicare Supplement Plan G.
