Medicare Part A, also called hospital insurance, is a part of Original Medicare that offers inpatient coverage. Most of the people who qualify for Medicare are automatically enrolled for Medicare Part A and can receive the plan premium-free.
Those that have worked at least 40 quarters and paid Medicare payroll taxes will receive premium-free Part A coverage. However, if you don’t qualify, you will be required to pay a monthly premium.
In this post, we’ll take a look at the services Medicare Part A covers.
Hospital Stays
Generally, Medicare Part A covers hospital stays, including general nursing, semi-private room, and certain hospital supplies and services. Also, Medicare Part A may cover inpatient care in long-term care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, and more. However, you need to meet specific criteria before Medicare Part A can cover the care listed above.
Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Care
Part A covers the cost of SNF care for a maximum of 100 days for each benefit period. Medicare covers your room, board, and certain services provided in a skilled nursing facility. To qualify, you must have spent at least three consecutive days in the hospital within 30 days of admission to a skilled nursing facility and must have needed skilled nursing or therapy services.
Hospice Care
If you have a terminal illness and are given six months or less to live, Medicare will cover the services you receive with hospice care. The coverage includes medical supplies and equipment, doctor services, and nursing care. Hospice care is usually rendered at home or a facility where the patient lives. To qualify, you must also agree to have palliative care and sign an agreement that states you will accept hospice care rather than other treatments for your condition.
Home Health Services
Though it is typically covered by Part B, Part A coverage will kick in if you have spent at least three consecutive days as a hospital inpatient within 14 days of receiving home care. Up to 100 days of daily care are covered or an unlimited amount of intermittent care.
Blood Transfusions
Medicare Part A will typically cover the blood you receive as an inpatient in a hospital.
