Utah Medicare Plans

Utah Medicare plans offer the best coverage when supported by a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) or Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicare Supplements cover the deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and more that Original Medicare doesn’t, saving thousands of dollars. It also gives you the freedom to see any doctor that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans offer similar coverage to Original Medicare, but offer extras, including prescription drug coverage, and sometimes don’t cost you any additional premium.

Utah Medicare plans open enrollment

Medicare beneficiaries in Utah are eligible for Medicare at age 65. Initial enrollment begins three months before your birth month and lasts three months after. During initial enrollment, you can also apply for Medicare Supplements.

Although you can enroll in a supplement at any time, initial enrollment is the best time to do so because you cannot be turned down due to your health.

Medigap Plans

Medicare Supplements in Utah cover some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance left over by Original Medicare.

This can save you thousands of dollars because Medicare only covers about 80% of your outpatient expenses. Original Medicare also does not have any limits on out-of-pocket costs. A supplement would put a cap on your out-of-pocket spending.

Another overlooked feature is you are not limited to any networks and choose to see any doctor that accepts Medicare.

There are 10 plans lettered A through N that offer standardized coverage. This means all plans lettered the same have to offer the same coverage and the only difference is price. So, be sure to shop your coverage. Or, you can use our service to save you both time and money as we will do all the shopping for you!

After the end of 2019, new Medicare enrollees will no longer be able to select Medigap Plans C or F in Utah. Beneficiaries who already have these plans will be able to keep them.

Because these plans are standardized by the federal government, the only difference will be in price. Be sure you have someone shopping the policy to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Medicare Advantage plans

Utah has up to 21 Medicare Advantage plans available, depending on what county you live in. Also known as Medicare Part C plans, Medicare Advantage is a private Medicare plan that provides all Original Medicare benefits but also include extra benefits like dental, prescription drugs, and vision coverage. In Utah, open enrollment for Medicare Advantage begins on January 1 and ends on March 31. Those who are already enrolled in Medicare Advantage can switch to a different plan during this open enrollment or opt to have Original Medicare instead.

Medicare Part D

While Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans don’t offer coverage for prescription drugs, there is an option to enroll in Medicare Part D. There are 26 Part D plans available in Utah in 2019. If you don’t want to pay out-of-pocket for your prescriptions, be sure to look into Medicare Advantage or a standalone Part D plan.
