Wisconsin Medicare Plans

Over 80 percent of Medicare beneficiaries of Wisconsin Medicare Plans had a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) or Medicare Advantage plan in 2019.

Medicare Supplements cover the deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and more that Original Medicare doesn’t, saving thousands of dollars. It also gives you the freedom to see any doctor that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans offer similar coverage to Original Medicare, but offer extras, including prescription drug coverage, and sometimes don’t cost you any additional premium.

Wisconsin Medicare Plans Open Enrollment

Medicare beneficiaries in Wisconsin are eligible for Medicare at age 65. Initial enrollment begins three months before your birth month and lasts three months after. During initial enrollment, you can also apply for Medicare Supplements.

Although you can enroll in a supplement at any time, initial enrollment is the best time to do so because you cannot be turned down due to your health.

Medigap Plans

Medicare Supplements (Medigap) in Wisconsin cover some of the costs left over by Original Medicare. Private insurance companies offer these plans. While most states offer 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans, Wisconsin is one of the three anomalies.

All Medigap plans in Wisconsin have to cover these basic benefits:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance — for inpatient hospital care
  • Medicare Part A hospice copayment
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance — for medical services
  • First three pints of blood used annually

One of your supplemental insurance options in Wisconsin is the basic plan. It covers all basic benefits, and:

  • Medicare Part A skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • An extra 175 days of inpatient mental health coverage per lifetime — in addition to what Medicare covers
  • An additional 40 home health care visits, besides what Medicare covers
  • State-mandated benefits, like preventive services

If you’re a beneficiary in Wisconsin, you can also add on riders to your Medigap coverage. These are optional benefits that help pay the deductibles for Parts A and B, Part B excess charges, and more. Wisconsin also offers two Medicare Supplements that help with your Original Medicare expenses — on a 25% or 50% cost-sharing level. These plans are a lot like Medigap Plan K and Plan L in other states.

The Bobby Brock Insurance team can help you build a Medigap plan by piecing those riders together, making sure that all parts of your Medicare are covered.

Medicare Advantage plans

Wisconsin has up to 47 Medicare Advantage plans available, depending on what county you live in. Also known as Medicare Part C plans, Medicare Advantage is a private Medicare plan that provides all Original Medicare benefits but also include extra benefits like dental, prescription drugs, and vision coverage. In Wisconsin, open enrollment for Medicare Advantage begins on January 1 and ends on March 31. Those who are already enrolled in Medicare Advantage can switch to a different plan during this open enrollment or opt to have Original Medicare instead.

Medicare Part D

While Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans don’t offer coverage for prescription drugs, there is an option to enroll in Medicare Part D. There are 28 Part D plans available in Wisconsin in 2020. If you don’t want to pay out-of-pocket for your prescriptions, be sure to look into Medicare Advantage or a standalone Part D plan.
