Medicare Supplement Plan Comparison
Medicare Supplement Plan Comparison – There are 10 Medicare Supplement Insurance plans lettered A through N. Each plan differs in the amount of coverage provided for the “gaps” left behind by Original Medicare.
Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap plans, are offered by private insurance companies licensed by Medicare. Each is required by Medicare to have standardized coverage and plan letters no matter which insurance company you purchase them from. The only difference you’ll find among plans is price of premium.
We have broken down the coverage of each Medigap plan below so you can make an informed decision about your healthcare coverage.
Which Medicare Supplement Plan is the best?
As you can see from the chart below, Medicare Supplement Plan F provides the most comprehensive coverage.
Plan F covers:
- Original Medicare Part A’s deductible
- Part B deductible
- Part B excess charges
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare’s benefits are all used up
- Part B coinsurance or copayments
- First three pints of blood used in an approved medical procedure
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
- 80% of a foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits)
Because of the peace of mind it offers, Plan F is one of the most frequently purchased Medigap plans.
Plan G is another frequently purchased supplement plan because it offers almost the same coverage. The only thing Plan G does not cover is Medicare Part B’s deductible, which is only $185 in 2019. If you can find Plan G significantly cheaper than Plan F, it might make fiscal sense to pay the one-time Plan B deductible and save on the monthly premium of your supplemental plan.
What do Medicare Supplement Plans cover?
If you want a quick-hit list instead of the above chart, we have provided a list below with a quick overview of what each Medigap plan covers:
Medigap Plan A
Medigap Plan A is the most basic Medigap plan. It covers the 20% that Original Medicare doesn’t on Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, Part B coinsurance or copayment, first three pints of blood during a medical procedure, and Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment. So, it is still an incredibly effective cost-saving policy. Read more about Medigap Plan A here!
Medigap Plan B
Medigap Plan B covers everything Plan A does — Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, Part B coinsurance or copayment, first three pints of blood during a medical procedure, and Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment — but also pays for Medicare Part A’s deductible.
Medigap Plan C
Medigap Plan C covers all of your out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare except Part B excess charges. It even covers 80% of a foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits). Plan C is one of the most comprehensive supplement plans.
Medigap Plan D
Supplement Plan D covers all of your out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare except Part B’s deductible and excess charges. It also covers 80% of a foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits).
Medigap Plan F
Medigap Plan F covers all out-of pocket costs associated with Original Medicare and 80% of a foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits). Plan F is one of the most popular Medicare Supplement insurance plans because it is the most comprehensive plan.
Medigap Plan G
Medigap Plan G covers almost all out-of pocket costs associated with Original Medicare and 80% of a foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits). The only thing it does not cover is Part B’s deductible. Because that deductible is only a couple hundred dollars, sometimes it is worth taking Medigap Plan G over Plan F because of the monthly premium savings.
Medigap Plan K
Plan K covers 50% of your Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayments, three pints of blood during a medical procedure, Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and Medicare Part A deductible.
Medigap Plan L
Plan L covers 75% of your Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayments, three pints of blood during a medical procedure, Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and Medicare Part A deductible.
Medigap Plan M
Plan M covers all of your Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayments, three pints of blood during a medical procedure, Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and Medicare Part A deductible. It also covers 50% of your Part A deductible and 80% of a foreign travel emergency.
Medigap Plan N
Medigap Plan N covers all of your out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare except Part B’s deductible and excess charges. It even covers 80% of a foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits). Plan N is one of the most comprehensive supplement plans.
The only thing you pay for regarding your Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayments is you’ll pay $20 copay for some doctor’s office visits and up to a $50 copay for emergency room visits if you aren’t admitted as an inpatient.
